Tomato prices in Tamil Nadu touched Rs 100 in Chennai retail market on Friday due to cultivation within and outside the State. The prices of Tomato had been rising steadily for the past few weeks. Tomato touched Rs 110 per kg on Friday.

On Thursday Tomato prices touched Rs 100 in Chennai. Prices of Tomato touched Rs 80 in Tiruchy, 80-90 in Coimbatore, and 60-80 in Madurai. According to M Thiagarajan, President, Koyambedu Vegetable, Fruit and Flower Sellers’ Welfare Association, the wholesale rate of native tomatoes was Rs 80 a kg and Rs 85-95 for naveen tomatoes.

Chandran, President of Licensed Merchants Association said, it may take at least two months for the tomatoes to be harvested again, so there is no chance of the prices coming down before July end.

The arrival of Tomatoes at Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market decreased by nearly 50%.
